Expected Variation

Statisticians use the term standard deviation to explain variations from the expected result. Remember our example in the beginning that if we flipped a coin 10 times and it came up 7 heads and 3 tails, this would not mean our coin is dishonest? This is considered normal fluctuation. But if we flipped it 10000 times and it came up 7000 times heads and 3000 tails, it is vey unlikely that this is an honest coin. The large ratio makes this highly unlikely.

Standard deviation is the square root of the number of trials divided by 2.

Too technical?

Take a calculator

The square root of 25 is 5 so the standard deviation is 5/2 = 2.5

The square root of 1000 is 31.6 so the standard deviation is 31.6/2= 15.8

If you understand what the square root of a number means to a statistician, you will understand why it is normal to come up with 7 heads on 10 flips of a coin, but close to impossible to come up with 7000 heads out of 10000 flips of a coin.

While gambling we can expect to be at a standard deviation of 1 most times, of 2 some times, 3 and more rarely.

This is always an interesting context to keep in mind when playing especially on a losing streak. The most succesive losses I have had in a blackjack game have been 16 in a row! Imagine how I was cursing.

It happens though and it does not necessary mean the casino is cheating - Its just standard deviation. Remember those times when you will have 10 wins in a row and you will understand what I mean!

If you do suspect your results are way out of line and suspect the casino of cheating - check with casinomeister, a great website set up for gamblers and very informative concerning rogue casinos.

The casinos on this website have either been played at or well researched but please let us know if you had a problem with any of them.
